Reading

Early reading at Bishop William Ward is taught using systematic synthetic phonics (Letters and Sounds).
Throughout the school, teacher-led guided reading sessions and the ‘DERIC’ approach to reading comprehension are strategies used to deliver the teaching of Reading. This is supported with a structured reading scheme using a range of books.

Phonics
From Foundation Stage and through Key Stage 1, children have regular Phonics sessions, taught in class.  For more details about Phonics, including how you can support your child, click here.

DERIC
DERIC is a strategy that helps children identify the skills needed to become a successful reader.  To find out more (including what DERIC stands for!) click here.

A Love of Reading
We encourage children to love Reading.  Throughout the year, we hold different events such as: Book Swap; ‘Reading Aloud’ (books for parents to read to their children); paired reading; The Story Gift project (Y6 pupils taking reading sessions for Key Stage 1 children); celebrating World Bok Day.  Children also have the opportunity to choose the books that they wish to see on the shelves in our library.  Each class in Key Stage 2 has a set of more challenging texts as part of their class libraries to encourage children to read at a greater depth.

We are extremely grateful to the parents, grand parents and other friends of the school for the time they give voluntarily to come in and support children with their reading.
